The MTV Video Music Awards benefit concert isn’t televised but when rapping sensation Iggy Azalea falls off the stage while performing her hit Fancy, it goes viral. Security guards picked up Azalea and she got right back into the groove with Fancy featured singer Charli XCX (Boom Clap). Azalea’s Fancy has been nominated for seven VMAs. Charli XCX, considered an underdog compared to Sam Smith (Stay With Me), is nominated for Artist to Watch.
Charli XCX was chosen (with Fifth Harmony) to perform at the VMA pre-show, which is a big promo push from MTV Networks. In the past, MTV has used the pre-show to identify future stars including Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. “When we had No Doubt it was just as they were breaking nationally,” VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told Billboard. “It’s a time for many viewers to get their first exposure to these bands.”
