Ev Williams, the innovative co-founder of Twitter and Blogger, launched the writing platform Medium in 2012. Invitation only at first, Medium has become a place where anyone can write, opine and promote themselves for free. And they sure do. Medium’s top articles include The Secret to Getting Top-Secret Secrets, 7 Reasons Why You Will Never Do Anything Amazing with Your Life, and I Hate Being an Architect. Those three will take you 25, 7, and 23 minutes, respectively, to read. (Medium does that user-friendly thing and tells you how long each article should take.) There goes an hour.
While expanding its cadre of writers, Medium is extending its brand, too. The company recently relaunched Matter, described by Medium as “a magazine for a generation who grew up not caring about magazines.” (Proving that if you founded Twitter, you can sell anything.) As of this month, Matter‘s content is heavy on Britney Spears, Jason Biggs who stars in Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
