George R.R. Martin, author of the Game of Thrones series, bought a vacant movie theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives. The Jean Cocteau Cinema, named after the French filmmaker and artist, first opened in 1976. As with many single screen move theaters, it’s experienced great financial strains over the years. But since Martin reopened the theater in August 2013, it’s been thriving.
The Cinema is more of a cultural center these days. It’s not all about movies. There are magic shows, live music performances, political fundraisers, and book signings for writers like Junot Diaz and Neil Gaiman. Like the everything goes kind of parties Cocteau himself favored, the Cinema is the sort of gathering place where even Westeros and Essos might meet.
