Lucy Lawless, the former warrior princess Xena, will make her debut in season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Isabelle Hartley. Her character is a S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran called in to help Agent Phil Coulson rebuild the American espionage organization. But no one knows if she should be trusted. There’s more mystery behind this “new” character. Based on the original Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. comics, Lawless’ character Isabelle could very well be the one that dated the late Victoria Hand. “There’s always a chance,” writer and producer Jed Whedon says.
While Xena’s sexuality was left deliberately ambiguous by the writers, after five years of portraying Xena, Lawless did go on record saying that she believed Xena was “definitely gay. Will Marvel also leave Isabelle’s sexuality in question? Fans will have to tune in to find out. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere September 23 at 9pm ET on ABC.
