LeBron James has been to eight NBA Finals and been drenched in champagne in just three of them. Both facts are extraordinary: James’ seven straight NBA Finals in the modern era — call that the post-Bill Russell era — is a mind-boggling feat of talent, will and consistency. That he has won the crown just three times is a testament to how hard it is to climb the mountain.
Fittingly, James has always shown much respect for those who climb the hard mountains in front of them. That’s why James rarely fails to give propers where they are due — and why he shouted out the WNBA in his postgame presser. The WNBA is filled with athletes who play the game with passion and for the reasons LeBron James still plays it — because they love basketball. Sounding drained but resolute after his Cavs came up short against the Warriors for the 2017 NBA title, James said he wouldn’t be playing much ball this summer, but he’d be watching. “I’ll probably watch some WNBA games,” James said, also mentioning his “son’s tournament this summer.”
