The Dateline episode “Betrayed” investigates the 2008 murder of South Florida lawyer Melissa Lewis. In 2016, her best friend’s estranged husband, train conductor Tony Villegas, was found guilty of first-degree murder. Lewis was strangled and found in a canal near her home. Villegas allegedly blamed Lewis for his failing marriage. Lewis and Debra Villegas worked together at the prestigious law firm Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler.

The firm closed in 2010 after its founder Scott Rothstein pleaded guilty to running a $1.4 billion Ponzi scheme. He was sentenced to 50 years in jail. His young wife Kim Rothstein was also sent to prison but for 18 months. She admitted to trying to hide “more than $1 million worth of jewelry from federal authorities in the criminal and bankruptcy cases.” Since her release from jail, she has been granted a divorce and is reportedly working as a salesperson at a luxury car dealership. Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 10pm.
