Put too many of our words in front of Vin Scully‘s own? We wouldn’t dare. Below is a snippet of the chat Scully had with the “Say Hey Kid,” Willie Mays, at Scully’s final game. He tells Mays, as you’ll hear, that “you’ve always been my favorite player.”
Just a note to emphasize what that means: Mays retired after the 1973 MLB season, so Scully has seen 43 years worth of ballplayers since. Yet none managed to topple Mays from his prime position in Scully’s selective pantheon. Mays played 22 years, got 3,283 hits, dinged 660 home runs, and stole 338 bases. He made a couple of catches too.
