South Carolina hired Steve Spurrier’s replacement in Will Muschamp over the weekend. Muschamp was the defensive coordinator at Auburn after having coached at Florida from 2010-2014. Fans were not too sold on the new hire, but Muschamp has attempted to curry favor among the Gamecock faithful by bringing in former Auburn assistant and South Carolina native son Bobby Bentley.
Bentley is the former head coach of in-state high school football powerhouse James F. Byrnes. While at Byrnes, Bentley lead the Rebels to four consecutive appearances in the South Carolina High School League Class 4A State Championship game from 2002-2005, winning two state titles during that span and gaining national recognition. The Gamecocks’ legendary running back Marcus Lattimore, who played for Bentley as a high school freshman, tweeted out his support of the hire simply stating, “The king is back.” Bentley will coach running backs at South Carolina.
