Pete Brownell is the newly elected President of the National Rifle Association (NRA) which is headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, less than 20 miles from Washington, D.C. It is listed as a 501©(4) non-profit organization with 5 million members. Brownell is the grandson of Bob Brownell, founder of Brownells, the world’s largest supplier of firearm parts, gunsmithing tools, equipment and accessories. Based in Iowa, Brownells is reportedly one of the NRA’s largest corporate donors. The Brownells company historically does well financially after mass shooting events. In the wake of such tragedies, large segments of the population decry a perceived lack of adequate gun legislation and organize to influence lawmakers for greater gun control and so-called assault rifle restrictions. Meanwhile another segment of the population, worried the first group might be successful in legally limiting gun purchasing power, stocks up on their arsenals. After the Newton, Connecticut mass shooting on December 14, 2012, Pete Brownell wrote on AR15.com (on December 20) that his company sold approximately 3.5 years worth of magazines in 72 hours.
On the Brownells website, visitors can purchase high-capacity magazines for handguns and assault rifles, including magazines that hold up to 30 bullets. On the day after the Las Vegas mass shooting in September, the Brownells Twitter account posted a video demonstrating how easy it is to assemble a Ruger 10/22 rifle. The next day, the company posted a video review of a new line of rifle optics for distance targets.
