On the WISN 12 News show ‘Up Front,’ U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman (R-WI) spoke about the ongoing Affordable Care Act subsidies extension fight in the House, and was asked “If a vote on subsidies does come to the House before the end of the year, does it pass the House?”
Grothman replied: “I hate to guess. My guess is there are enough people there who will vote yes on anything. That if it is the Democrat plan, I think it’ll pass the House. I shouldn’t say that, but, you know, you only need to add three or four Republicans to all the Democrats and it’ll pass.”
A House Republican just confirmed that my common sense proposal to extend ACA tax credits would pass today.

So why won’t Speaker Johnson bring it to the floor? pic.twitter.com/oZCdwEBAp1
[Note: Despite his belief that his party’s plan to repeal ACA was “too expensive,” Grothman voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act in 2017.]
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) responded to Grothman’s interview: “A House Republican just confirmed that my common sense proposal to extend ACA tax credits would pass today. So why won’t Speaker Johnson bring it to the floor?”
Last week, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said his team was working on a Republican health care alternative to ACA and will present it to his conference on Tuesday.
Grothman isn’t the only House Representative doubting the Speaker’s ACA replacement plan. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), who’s working on a separate compromise bill that would include a longer subsidy extension, criticized Johnson’s approach when he said: “Is it a Republican-only solution? That’s not a serious solution.”
