President Trump’s Vice President JD Vance was criticized this weekend for leading a “failed” first round of negotiations with Iran in Switzerland.
Former Obama-era National Security Advisor Susan Rice called the MOU the Trump administration signed a “horrific surrender” and former GOP presidential candidate and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie blamed Trump for sending a “naive and inexperienced” Vance to the Swiss negotiating table with “the two other guys.”
[NOTE: The “other guys” are the President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and real estate billionaire Steve Witkoff, who serves as a Special Envoy to the Middle East, both of whom Christie portrayed as out of their depths.]
The President’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., defended Vance on social media and wrote: “A lot of the people who were pushing lies and propaganda about the talks failing yesterday, look really stupid right now!!!”

Trump, Jr. shared a clip of Vance announcing that “The Iranians have agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into their country, that is a major milestone for the American people and a first step in permanently denuclearizing or permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran. And that’s exactly what we wanted to do.”
[NOTE: Obama’s 2015 JCPOA included IAEA inspection provisions. During his first term, in 2018, President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the agreement and, in July 2025, after the U.S. and Israel bombed Iranian nuclear sites, Iran suspended cooperation with IAEA inspectors.]
Vance’s milestone claim is being met with skepticism even from some MAGA supporters, including Esso Bregor, who replied: “Here we go, this is starting to sound like the 1990’s/2000’s Iraq timeline. Agree to inspectors, repeatedly deny access to inspectors, eventually led to decades long war. I guess we’re dusting off the old playbook and giving it another try. Since when is Islamic Iran trustworthy?”
