“The Italian Coast Guard has started to dread good weather,” says CBS correspondent Clarissa Ward. They are the ones who receive the desperate calls for help. More than 800 migrants tragically drowned off the Libyan coast as they tried to reach Europe last week. It isn’t the first time. Thousands of people have died trying to make that same dangerous journey on overloaded fishing boats and rubber rafts. The migrants come from war-ravaged parts of the Middle East and Africa. Some spend hours or days hoping to be rescued before they sink.
CBS correspondent Clarissa Ward reports on the situation on 60 Minutes, Sunday, April 26 at 7pm.
