President Trump’s U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer attended the 250th anniversary celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where he was asked by Fox News to comment on “these Democratic Socialists who are on the march and they are promising the moon and the stars and lots of free things.”
[NOTE: Democratic Socialist and Mayor of New York City Zohran Mamdani campaigned on making NYC more affordable, including “fast and free” buses. On Tuesday, as an interim step, he agreed with the City Council to expand the “Fair Fares” program, which offers half-priced transit tickets for buses and subways for low-income riders. The expanded “Fair Fares” program is now available to workers who earn less than about $32,000 a year, or $66,000 for a family of four, and to those making the city’s minimum wage of $17 an hour.]
Greer replied to the question about Democratic Socialists: “These are people who generally haven’t lived in the real world. These are people that have failed up. They’ve gone and borrowed hundreds of thousands of dollars to get master’s degrees and doctorates in irrelevant things. While we’re focused on people who are building.”

Greer added, “These people who come in and say ‘well, I’m gonna give away free stuff,’ nothing is free. We all have to work. Everything you’re giving for free to someone, there’s a hardworking American who’s built it in a factory, who’s grown it in a field, and that’s what we’re focused on.”
[NOTE: Pursuing what he deemed relevant things, Greer earned a B.A. from Brigham Young University, two LL.M. degrees (from the Sorbonne University and Sciences Po), and a J.D. from the University of Virginia.]
