Third-generation cattleman David Alwan of Peoria, Illinois sells “old fashion butcher shop” quality meat. He started cutting meat when he was 11. The story goes he had to stand on a milk crate to reach the cutting table. In 1998, he started his own company. He got trained by the best in Germany and Denmark. These days he runs a virtual gourmet shopping market called Echo Valley Meats.
Echo Valley’s most popular item is their ham. Alwan is one of the few in the US who doesn’t add water to his ham. The executive package, which includes 1 whole smoked spiral ham, 6 summer sausage and 2 cheese spreads with a box of crackers, goes for $169.95. But wait, there’s more! Echo Valley Meats is expanding its business and selling gourmet edible cookie dough. Four flavors — Chocolate Chip, Cookies N’ Cream, Monster and Naked Dough are available on EchoValleyMeats.com (8 1-pint jars go for $89.95).
