57% of Chipotle customers don’t finish their burritos. You’ve been there. The generous helpings can be overwhelming–and Mom’s old adage “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach” runs through your mind as you throw away perfectly good food. But those giant servings are part of the Chipotle brand! The chain can’t possibly trim the size–even the overstuffed 57% would revolt.
So Chipotle issued a challenge at Hack//Dining NYC, a food/tech conference. And hackers responded by developing an app called Just Right that would reward users for taking it easy on the ordering side–in essence making eyes and stomachs the same size. Great idea, though it would probably make the famous streamlined Chipotle assembly line a hellish slog. It’s a start anyway. The Motley Fool reports that by using the app Chipotle could “save 10% of its food, beverage and packaging costs.” And if people could feel a little better–like they didn’t waste food while some in the world go hungry–that would help the Chipotle brand a lot, too.
