MAGA-aligned House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) warned fellow Republicans that while President Trump isn’t on the ballot this November, “in a real sense he is.”
Johnson said: “If we were to lose the midterms, heaven forbid, these Democrats, y’all impeachment’s not even the big concern. They will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body, and they’ll go after the president’s family, the cabinet, his donors and friends, half of you in this room will be targeted. I run the protection program. We’ll take care of you.”

Johnson echoed a speech delivered in November by Trump’s former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who refused to comply with a subpoena from the January 6 House select committee, was indicted by a federal grand jury on criminal charges of contempt of Congress, and served four months in prison.
Bannon told the Conservative Partnership Academy: “As God is my witness, if we lose the midterms and we lose 2028, some in this room are going to prison, myself included.”
He said of Democrats, “They’re not going to stop,” and said Republicans, “have to counter that…with more action, more intense action,” asserting that the GOP “has to codify the president’s executive orders.”

On Wednesday, after a federal judge permanently barred Trump from implementing his executive order on elections — requiring people to show documentary proof of citizenship when they register to vote — U.S. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) told reporters: “I think it’s ironic that we control the House, Senate, Supreme Court, and the White House, and we’re yelling ‘election fraud’? I mean, we won all the damn elections.”

In May, after Massie lost the GOP primary to Trump-endorsed Ed Gallrein, Massie filed to run for his Kentucky House seat in 2028. Massie said doing so allows him “to raise funds to continue my political operations supporting my position as a current office holder and as a potential candidate for federal office.”
[NOTE: Johnson is running for re-election in Louisiana against Republicans Joshua Morott and Mike Nichols and Democrats Conrad Cable and Matthew Gromlich. As seen below, like Massie, Morott is also questioning the party’s promises of putting America First.]
