Second Lady Usha Vance, who is expecting her fourth child with Vice President JD Vance, wrote on social media today: “Thank you for the outpouring of love and excitement as we prepare to welcome our fourth child. Your support means more to us than we can say. In place of gifts, we would be honored if you would consider making a donation to your local diaper bank to help families in need.”
Former U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) replied to Second Lady Vance: “In place of gifts we would appreciate you @SLOTUS to take a stand against putting women – including pregnant women – and children in detention centers – that would be a wonderful outpouring of love and kindness towards women and children wouldn’t it? Your support would mean more than they could say.”

Comstock’s comment incited comments from people on both sides of the political divide. One commenter replied, “SLOTUS ask yourself why in the US people cannot afford diapers and basic supplies!”
[NOTE: In January, the Trump administration “froze $10 billion in funding for child care subsidies, social services and cash support for low-income families in five states controlled by Democrats,” as the New York Times reported, “claiming without evidence widespread fraud throughout those states after a major welfare fraud scheme in one of them.]
Standing further right, another commenter replied to Comstock writing, “If they’d take the money and self-deport, there would be no detention.”
Note: There are no current official statistics released by the Department of Homeland Security, nor ICE, detailing how many pregnant women are currently detained. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, the reason is because “ICE stopped regularly reporting the number of pregnant, postpartum, and nursing women in its custody after reporting requirements were removed by the Republican-controlled Congress in 2025.”
Despicable. Maybe @SLOTUS could ask her husband to help this child inhumanely imprisoned in a detention camp for 113 days instead of just sending diapers somewhere? https://t.co/X719p9rXiY

When U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) shared the letter and drawing above by a 9-year-old girl who has been “detained for months,” Comstock amplified the post and replied, “Despicable. Maybe @SLOTUS could ask her husband to help this child inhumanely imprisoned in a detention camp for 113 days instead of just sending diapers somewhere?”
