MAGA-aligned U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is one of nearly 30 Republican Study Committee (RSC) members who are demanding that Senate Republicans schedule an immediate vote on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which passed the House in April.
If passed, the SAVE Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship when a person registers to vote.
On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said that he’s amending the bill to make it even more restrictive. In addition to requiring proof of U.S. citizenship when one registers to vote, the amended bill would also require a voter to show photo identification when they cast ballots. Thune said when the amended bill is ready, “we’ll have that vote.”

Luna isn’t confident the current approach will work. The Congresswoman warned Friday on social media: “Do not let Republicans fool you. If the save act or save America act is not attached to an appropriation’s [sic] bill, it will fail as a standalone in the Senate. Which is why the appropriations that comes out of the house MUST have this attached. I’m well aware of the fact that they anticipate pushing five of the bills together however, the DHS bill will be a standalone and MUST have this attached.”
Luna’s skepticism appears justified, as the left-leaning Democracy Docket reports: “Even if every Republican voted for it, they would need seven additional votes to break a filibuster. The less-strict House version that passed last spring only received four Democratic votes in support. Given that, some SAVE Act backers have urged the GOP to scrap the filibuster. [President] Trump has repeatedly demanded Senate Republicans ‘TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER.'”
