White supremacist and former Imperial Wizard in the KKK David Duke is emboldened by the election of Donald Trump as president. Duke uses his Twitter account to call for the destruction of the mainstream media, the building of the proposed wall on the US Southern border and to rail against Jews and African Americans. To the average American, Duke’s voice has long seemed worrisome but far on the fringe. Now the influence and proliferation of his viewpoints are being reconsidered in the aftermath of the election.
Duke tweeted that he experienced one of the “most exciting nights” of his life on election night, claiming Trump’s victory was made possible by the “huge role” played by “our people.” For Duke, “our people” means white supremacists. Duke’s trail of hate and vitriol on Twitter was previously considered by most observers to be a sad sideshow, a relic of an American fringe long past its prime. Duke contends now that Trump’s victory proves he and his ilk are still relevant, even surging. Is he right?
This is one of the most exciting nights of my life -> make no mistake about it, our people have played a HUGE role in electing Trump! #MAGA pic.twitter.com/HvJyiJYuVa
