In the Black Ink Crew: Chicago episode “I Hope You Make It to America,” tattoo shop manager turned radio talk show host Charmaine takes to the streets of Chicago to protest R. Kelly. Charmaine’s co-worker, Kendra G, host of WGCI Morning, asked Charmaine to join a protest against the R&B singer who has been accused by several women of sexual abuse. Kelly was charged in a 10-count indictment by a Cook County grand jury in Chicago on February 22. Kelly’s lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his client’s behalf. Kelly was was released on February 26 after a friend posted his $100,000 cash bail.
Charmaine explains that she and Kendra are in a very unique position – as women who work for Chicago’s top urban radio station – to talk about the allegations. “It’s time for the women in Chicago to let R. Kelly know — we know where you live. And if you really are abusing under-aged girls, or are abusing women period, we ain’t gonna let you slide.” Black Ink Crew: Chicago airs Wednesdays at 9 pm on VH1.
