In The Simpsons episode “The Girl on the Bus,” Lisa spots a new best friend “Sam” from the window of the bus, and gets a taste of what life could be like with a different, more cultured family. Instead of eating dinner in front of the TV, Sam’s family play music for each other. Her mother plays the cello, her father the piano. Sam’s mother is voiced by Broadway superstar Patti LuPone.
A two-time Grammy Award winner (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) and two-time Tony Award winner (Evita, Gypsy), LuPone is also known for her TV roles on Penny Dreadful (Dr. Seward), American Horror Story (Joan Ramsey), 30 Rock (Sylvia Rossitano), Oz (Stella Coffa), and Life Goes On (Libby Thatcher), among others.
LuPone is also recognized for her roles in a variety of films including David Mamet’s State and Main (Sherry Bailey) and Heist (Betty Croft, SEE LINK ABOVE), and Peter Weir’s Witness (Elaine), among others. The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8 pm on FOX.
