In the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 5 fall finale “Game Night,” Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) enlists fellow NYPD detective Jake Perolta (Andy Samberg) to help her break big news to her parents. Jake agrees to help but their plan backfires when Rosa’s parents, Oscar and Julia (Olga Merediz, Orange Is the New Black), get confused and think Rosa and Jake are dating.
Rosa’s dad Oscar is portrayed by Danny Trejo. He’s best known for his film character Machete originally from the Spy Kids movies. Trejo is also recognized for his roles in Heat, Con Air, Desperado, and on Sons of Anarchy, among others. Story goes he got interested in acting while working as s youth drug counselor. A patient asked for his help on the set of the 1985 film Runaway Train starring Jon Voight and Eric Roberts. On the set, the screenwriter Edward Bunker recognized Trejo from San Quentin (they both did time at the famed prison). Bunker hired Trejo to train Roberts for his boxing skills, and was given a small role as a boxer in the film. Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Tuesdays at 9pm on FOX.
