In the Empire episode “Fortune Be Not Crost,” the Lyon family stands together in court when Hakeem (Bryshere “Yazz” Gray) and Anika’s (Grace Byers) legal battle over their baby girl Bella begins. Both parents testify in court, and yes, it gets messy. Even Lucious (Terrence Howard) whose memory isn’t what it used to be demands to testify. To break the dramatic tension, the camera turns to Shyne Johnson (Xzibit) in the studio who’s working with Christian singer J Poppa who’s singing the song “Need A Good Girl.”
J Poppa is portrayed by Maurice “Mo” McRae. The 6’2″ tall singer and actor from South Los Angeles is known for his roles on Pitch (Blip Sanders), Murder in the First (Anthony “Suger” Cascade), Sons of Anarchy (Tyler Yost), Ray Donovan (Deonte Frasier), and in the films Wild with Reese Witherspoon (Jimmy Carter), Lee Daniels’ The Butler (Eldridge Huggins), and Gridiron Gang with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Leon), among others. Empire airs Wednesdays at 8pm on FOX.
