Superstar Drake hit most Americans’ radar in 2010 when he dropped the sensational Thank Me Later album. (People have, actually, continued to thank him.) Before that, hip hop fans were already noticing with the Canadian rapper making an impression guesting on records by other big name artists. But before that, Drake — like many of today’s pop stars (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande) — was on TV in a series aimed at teens and tweens. In Drake’s case, he played Jimmy Brooks on Degrassi: The Next Generation, a giant hit with youth in his native Canada. Jimmy was a hoops star who was left paralyzed and in a wheelchair after a school shooting.

Drake reminded everybody of Jimmy and his TV past because Drake himself gets the occasional reminder — and this time he shared it with the world. Royalty checks continue to roll in — maybe it’s better to say they crawl in?– and Drake posted a recent one for a whopping $8.25. That’s burger money Jimmy Brooks wouldn’t have sneered at, but Drake has amassed a fortune in the tens, if not hundreds, of millions. Still, $8.25 does a body good at Five Guys.
