The 48 Hours episode “The Golden State Killer” features the life of writer Michelle McNamara, 46, who died unexpectedly in her sleep on April 21, 2016. After earning her MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota, McNamara launched her career as a screenwriter and then turned to her true love, true crime stories. She founded the blog, True Crime Diary, which has archived 173 articles. McNamara started the True Crime Diary site when she “decided the investigating she was doing on unsolved crimes to satisfy her own curiosity might be better shared.”

Right before her death, McNamara was reportedly close to finishing a book about The Golden State Killer, the horrific serial killer and rapist who terrorized California throughout the 1970s and 1980s. McNamara is survived by her husband, comedian/actor Patton Oswalt and their 7-year-old daughter Alice. One of the archived articles at True Crime Diary is by “guest blogger Patton Oswalt.” 48 Hours airs Saturdays at 10pm on CBS.
