On The Voice Blind Auditions, coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton respond quickly to the song choice of Johnny Gates who sings Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May.” All but Adam Levine turn around for the 31-year-old singer. Alicia Keys is quick to tell Johnny, “Your tone is outrageous.” He explains that he’s been in bands his whole life and that he and his current band (Runaway Saints) opened for Rod Stewart last summer. Blake Shelton doesn’t let Johnny make his decision before comparing him to Mick Jagger “as a performer.”

During a recent interview, Johnny was asked which was his best show so far. He said: “I would have to say the first night on the Rod Stewart tour. My mom is obsessed with Rod Stewart, so he was playing in the background for my entire childhood.” The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
