WWE champion John Cena is the host/star of the new reality show competition American Grit. The series features four military heroes (including Dancing with the Stars‘ Noah Galloway) who mentor 16 civilians. Working in teams of four, the civilians — fierce male and female competitors — will try to complete brutal military challenges. The one team to survive will win $1 million.
Outside of the WWE ring, Cena is notably less in your face. This moment in Cena’s career is being compared to a similar time in the career of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — when he first pivoted from wrestling to acting. (Cena recently appeared in the funny films Trainwreck and Sisters.) According to Time, Cena speaks fluently in the language of military veterans. And while he’s not a veteran, “with his inflated physique and carefully-crafted good-guy image, he’s a credible enough expert on masculinity.” American Grit airs Thursdays at 9pm on FOX.
