On The Good Wife, attorney Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) is coerced into playing the devil’s advocate. She thought she was hired to to prepare her client in a case regarding physician-assisted suicide. But when she’s told she has to argue the case in court, she says no. She won’t argue a anti-euthanasia case, it goes against her own beliefs, she says. But her client’s other lawyer, Ethan Carver, tells Diane that she really has no choice. “I hate being the bully here, I get very tense,” Carver tells Lockhart. He reminds Diane that she is compensated very well by her client. “If you don’t take over this case, we will lose and there’s no one else who knows it as well as you.”
Ethan Carver is portrayed by Peter Gallagher. The New York native is best known for roles in the movies American Beauty, While You Were Sleeping, and Adam Sandler’s Mr. Deeds. Gallagher has also appeared on several TV shows including Covert Affairs (Arthur Campbell), Rescue Me (Father Phil), Californication (Dean Stacy Koons), and The O.C. (Sandy Cohen), among many others. Gallagher is currently starring in Law & Order: SVU as Deputy Chief William Dodds. The Good Wife airs Sundays at 9pm on CBS.
