Leslie Mueller was married to her husband Fred Mueller for 27 years. They had successful careers in San Angelo, Texas where they raised their three children. When not in Texas, the Muellers vacationed at their family house in Lake City, Colorado. While there on May 3, 2008, Fred and Leslie went for a hike near Cottonwood Creek. While Fred was taking photos of Leslie and their dog, according to Fred, Leslie fell — “did a swan dive” — and then started going downstream. Fred went for help. Leslie’s dead body was found about 50 yards away, “wedged under a tree”.
Before being arrested for the murder of his wife, Fred Mueller remarried a longtime family friend, Wendee Walker. His first trial concluded with a hung jury. It wasn’t clear to the jury how Fred might have killed Leslie. Before his second trial, Fred — now accused of drowning Leslie — hired a new Colorado attorney, Pamela Mackey. She successfully defended NBA star Kobe Bryant in his 2003 sexual assault trial. The second trial also concluded with a hung jury. With no new evidence, there will be no third trial. The Muellers were interviewed for 48 Hours. They say “they’re grateful the case has been dismissed.” TLC will air the episode again on October 15 at 8pm.
