Emily Ann Roberts was 11 years old when she fell in love with a guitar. That was only five years ago, and now the sweet teen from Knoxville, Tennessee is auditioning on Season 9 of The Voice. “I took guitar lessons for about six months, but at the beginning of my seventh grade year, my teacher wanted to teach me classical and jazz, but I was not feeling it,” Roberts admitted to her hometown paper, The Daily Times. She ended up teaching herself how to play bluegrass.
In the seventh grade she won a school talent contest. That’s when she knew she wanted to become a professional performer. Her sound is described as “a combination of bluegrass and classic country inspired by Patty Loveless, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn and LeAnn Rimes.” But Roberts says her favorite band is The Dixie Chicks. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
