42-year-old team physician Eva Carneiro resigned her position at famed English football club Chelsea, after being called “naive” and having her role reduced by manager Jose Mourinho. The Gibraltar-born Carneiro, a sports medicine specialist, had been the Chelsea team doctor since 2009.
The attractive Carneiro had earlier been the subject of sexist chants from fans (she was on the field during matches) that triggered a reaction from European soccer officials, who have since tried to discourage the practice. Mourinho demoted Carneiro after a game in August during which the manager believed she was too swift to get onto the field to treat Eden Hazard, whom Mourinho felt was only superficially injured. Mourinho might have taken it up with Hazard, but pointed the finger at Carniero and her staff. A denigrated Carneiro left the team this week rather than continue in a diminished role.
