Misty Copeland might try tennis next. Why not? Really, what can’t the ballerina / Under Armour star / actress do? Copeland, who burst to fame as the first African American woman to dance the Swan Queen for the American Ballet Theatre, traveled two dozen blocks south this week to make her Broadway debut. Portraying Miss Turnstiles in the musical “On the Town”, Copeland had the audience enthralled. They cheered her every move.
For a debut, Copeland chose the right role since “On the Town” is filled with dancing, including ballet. But Copeland had to sing too, and the audience loved every note. Alas, the play closes September 6 — so hurry. Or just be patient; it’s likely Misty Copeland will find her way to the Broadway stage again. Or maybe she’ll take the 7 train to Queens and try the US Open next year. Sure there are plenty of better tennis players there, but hardly any better athletes. Ah, probably too late for tennis for Ms. Copeland. But you never know where this ambitious, driven, talented star will go next.
