Becky Hammon, the assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs who last year became the NBA’s first female full-time coach, will guide the Spurs in the Las Vegas summer league. It’s another first for Hammon and the NBA.
It’s a good gig if you can get it – -and it’s been a stepping stone. Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer, the 2015 NBA Coach of the Year, coached the Spurs in the summer league when he was an assistant under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. Popovich said back when Hammon was hired: “When you’ve been around it, you know who can coach and who can’t coach. Becky is one of those people. She’s a Steve Kerr. She’s a Doc Rivers. She’s those kind of people.”
