According to “Shimiken”, the 35-year-old adult porn star from Japan, male porn actors are a species at risk of extinction. In an industry worth over $20 billion, producers are worried that actors like Shimiken are overworked. Shimiken has filmed over 7,500 videos and racked-up over 8,000 sex partners. He says for every male porn actor there are over 100 females, and he works hard producing three or more films a day.
Porn industry experts put the problem squarely on evolving social tendencies starting in Japan in the mid 2000s. In a society of Hunters & Gatherers, the Gatherers are replacing the Hunters. The concept was launched by Maki Fukasawa, a journalist specializing in popular culture. The “Soshoku Danshi” or the “Male Plant Eater” has replaced the traditional macho male Japanese archetype. Fukasawa suggests that the young have lost interest in sex, traditional machismo and even professional success. This might explain Shimiken’s frustration and the industry’s shrinking assets.
