Director Michelle MacLaren won’t be shooting Wonder Woman for Warner Bros. Pictures after all, according to The Hollywood Reporter. MacLaren was installed in the director’s chair back in November. Wonder Woman is a very big deal for Warner Bros. and comics movies in general–the Amazon princess is really the only female superhero with broad public name recognition. Warner Bros. sees Wonder Woman as a chance to invite more women and girls into the comic universe, which has mostly been a boys club.
Apparently Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth revealed some creative differences between MacLaren’s vision and the studio’s. MacLaren would have been the first woman to helm a big time studio superhero movie. (Rachel Talalay directed the lower profile Tank Girl in 1995.) MacLaren is a veteran of Breaking Bad and The X-Files. Zack Snyder is directing Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman, due out this summer. Will Wonder Woman go to him? Does Snyder want her all alone?
