Star Wars creator George Lucas wanted to make a movie for his three daughters. He said he was inspired by Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to create his latest film, Strange Magic. “Just like Star Wars was designed for 12-year-old boys,” says Lucas, “Strange Magic was designed for 12-year-old girls.”
Lucas’ original idea was to use lyrics of some of his favorite songs including Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” and “Wild Thing” but “the rock opera concept was a little hard to pull off.” Lucas explains: “We decided that we could actually sharpen the story, tell it faster, and do more emotionally for the characters if we allowed them to speak, rather than just sing.”
