Paul Pierce misses Boston. An all-time Celtic great, Pierce is these days trying to make some noise as a Wizard in DC. But he has always regretted leaving Boston last year for a mediocre/miserable one-year stint with the Brooklyn Nets. Pierce told Sports Illustrated it was “hard to leave.” He even said he’d like to go back later as management or “maybe as a player.” That’ll surprise the Wizards, who signed Pierce for two years this summer.
But Pierce should realize that if he’s going to be a Boston Celtic in his heart, DC is a pretty good place to live. The legendary Celtic coach and later team president Red Auerbach was with the Boston Celtics for more than 30 years. And yet he never moved to Boston. Auerbach went to college at George Washington in DC and made his home in DC ever after. And since Auerbach was born in Brooklyn, Pierce is really just following him around. You don’t need to live there to bleed Celtic green.
