Former Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, was the first Indian American to win the Miss America pageant. Born in Syracuse, New York, Davuluri won the 2014 title after performing a Bollywood-inspired dance. Her win met an unfortunate blast of racist comments via social media. Some people on Twitter claimed she was an Arab, and a terrorist with ties to Al Qaeda.
Fox News host and author of God Less America, Todd Starnes, blamed Davuluri’s win on a “politically correct” panel of judges. He believed Miss Kansas deserved the crown more. He wrote: “The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this – but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values.” Last year’s Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, is a National Guard soldier who knows how to shoot a M16, skin a deer, and cook squirrel stew. (She is white with blond hair and blue eyes.) Theresa Vail is slated to get her own TV show, Limitless, on The Outdoor Channel, beginning July 2015. The Outdoor Channel broadcasts shows about hunting, fishing, Western lifestyle, and off-road motorsports. This year’s Miss Kansas, Amanda Sasek, wants to pursue a career in politics.
