Country fiddler Charlie Daniels of The Devil Went Down to Georgia fame has been a longtime Bob Dylan fan. In April, Daniels released the album Off the Grid – Doin’ It Dylan, where Daniels covers ten Dylan tracks including Just Like A Woman, I Shall Be Released, Mr. Tambourine Man, and The Times They Are a-Changing… When the Charlie Daniels Band performs live, they always slip in a few choice Dylan tunes.
How does Dylan feel about Daniels? He respects him enough to employ him. The fiddler performed on three of Dylan’s albums including his lauded 1967 Nashville Skyline. Daniels played bass and guitar. (The other two Dylan albums Daniels played on are Self-Portrait and New Morning.) Daniels says his sessions with Dylan inspired him “to think independently.”
