One of the three finalists on Big Brother 16 is Sergeant Derrick Levasseur from Central Falls, Rhode Island. While on the job in April 2007, Officer Levasseur and his partner Officer Maximiliano Gonzalez fatally shot a man, Selvin M. Garrido Morales, who had a knife. The Providence Journal reports that both officers were cleared by a grand jury.
Prior to becoming a police officer at the age of 20, Derrick attended Mitchell College on a full-ride baseball scholarship. That’s a big deal in Central Falls, where only 5.9% of residents age 25 and older have a bachelor’s or advanced degree. Derrick says if he wins the Big Brother prize of $500,000 he’ll pay off student loans (he went on to earn a master’s degree in Business Administration) and start a college fund for his 17-month-old daughter.
