You’ve seen his colorful psychedelic paintings – on stamps, racecars, airplanes and cruise ships. (His art has been licensed by more than 72 corporations.) So it might come as a surprise to you that Pop artist Peter Max is having his very first museum exhibition in New York. Does his work “belong within a continuum of Modernists such as Van Gogh and Gauguin, Matisse and the Fauves, Kandinsky, Josef Albers and Frank Stella?” Nassau County Museum of Art’s Curator-at-Large Charles A. Riley II says yes. (He can say things like that: Dr. Riley is also the author of The Art of Peter Max, Harry N. Abrams, 2002). Judge for yourself. This expansive exhibition of Max’s drawings will be on view at NCMA until February 23, 2014.
To complement the museum exhibition, Chasen Galleries in Richmond, VA will hold a retrospective show of Max’s work. Believe it or not, the show will include never-before-seen creations (also available for acquisition).
