Ivanka Trump caught some online heat for dressing like a princess with husband and top Donald Trump advisor Jared Kushner this past weekend. (Strangely, Kushner in his tux caught less heat, but anyway…) Ms. Trump was headed to a gala event — the Alfalfa Dinner at the Capital Hilton.
The problem was her timing, according to critics. That same night hundreds of people were detained in airports around the country and protests erupted because of the president’s executive order restricting immigration and refugee acceptance. A popular response to Ivanka Trump’s photo was the famous line attributed to Marie Antoinette: let them eat cake. (Things did not end well, btw, for Marie Antoinette.) Ms. Trump’s Carolina Herrera dress reportedly lists at Neiman Marcus for $4,990 — though it’s very possible Trump didn’t paid for it. Big name designers often give or lend famous people their clothing to expose their designs, as happens at red carpet events like the Academy Awards.
