Swimsuit fashion designer Sylvie Cachay, 33, was found dead in a Soho hotel bathtub in New York in 2010. Her boyfriend of six months Nicholas Brooks, 27, was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Prosecutors said he strangled her to death. Brooks is the son of Oscar-winning composer Joseph Brooks who wrote and directed the 1977 romantic comedy film You Light Up My Life (and the theme song of the same title). At the time of Nicholas’ arrest, Joseph Brooks was also facing criminal charges. He was accused of sexually assaulting 13 women he allegedly lured to his Upper East Side apartment (via a Craigslist ad) promising them auditions for movie roles. He was to be tried on 91 counts of rape, sexual abuse, criminal sexual act, assault, and other charges. While awaiting his trial, Joseph Brooks killed himself in 2011.
Nicholas’ sister Amanda Brooks spoke with 48 Hours about Nicholas. She said: “My brother absolutely did not murder Sylvia Cachay. He did not.” The 48 Hours episode will reair on July 16 at 10pm on CBS.
