In 2014, NBA player Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder was named MVP. During his acceptance speech, he didn’t just thank his mother, Wanda Pratt Durant, he honored her with a moving speech that had everyone on their feet applauding and in tears. Durant addressed his mother during the speech (see below): “We [Kevin and his big brother] wasn’t supposed to be here. You made us believe. You kept us off the street. You put clothes on our backs, food on the table. When you didn’t eat, you made sure we ate. You went to sleep hungry. You sacrificed for us. You the real MVP.”
Actress/producer Queen Latifah was so moved by the speech and the Durant family that she produced a TV movie titled The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story. Wanda is portrayed by Cassandra Freeman. Kevin Durant is portrayed by Daniel Bellomy. This is Bellomy’s national TV debut. His first role was in the 2013 short film A Matter of Time. He played Sheriff Sullivan Gridley. Bellomy will make his big screen debut in the forthcoming film Freak Show starring Abigail Breslin, AnnaSophia Robb, Laverne Cox, and Bette Midler. The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story will premiere on Lifetime on Saturday, May 7 at 8pm.
