Fifteen-year-old Gianna Isabella has made it to the Top 24 on the fifteenth and final season of American Idol. She impressed the judges at her audition even before she sang. Gianna let it be known that her mother is Brenda K. Starr. “I know Brenda,” said Jennifer Lopez. Starr and Lopez grew up near each other in New York City. They went to the same dance studio. Gianna proudly told the judges that Mariah Carey used to be one of Brenda’s back-up singers. “She’s taught me everything I know,” Gianna said of her mother. “She’s my idol.”
Brenda is best known for her 1988 pop hit “I Still Believe.” In September 2015, for the first time, Gianna got to sing with her mother on a big stage, at the Westchester County Center in New York. And yes, it was “I Still Believe” (see video below). American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8pm on FOX.
