Rachel Winkler was the third wife of former Air Force fighter pilot Todd Winkler, and the mother of his three young children. Todd Winkler was found guilty of brutally murdering Rachel at home with a pair of scissors in 2012. She was 37 years old. At Winkler’s sentencing in 2014, Rachel’s father Don Hatfield spoke. “Those beautiful children were orphaned in one cruel deed,” Hatfield said. “How will I ever explain, or even comment, on the question: ‘Why did Daddy kill Mommy?’”
Hatfield, a commercially successful impressionistic artist in Northern California, is raising his three grandchildren – Eva, 8, Ariel, 6, and Alex, 4. One year before his only daughter died, the 66-year-old’s wife Janey died of cancer. 48 Hours will air Richard Schlesigner’s investigative report on Saturday, December 12 at 10pm on CBS.
