Silicon Valley-based designer Irina Blok pitched her line of fun, fashionable surgical masks Face Blok on Shark Tank in 2009. The idea behind the line was to “take something sterile and uninteresting and fuse it with something fun.” Her designs included a pig’s snout, a zipper mouth, and a skeleton jawbone, among others. The Sharks didn’t bite. Good thing she kept her day job.

Blok went on to become famous (in the design world) for designing the Google Android logo. (That little green alien looking icon.) She told The New York Times that she was inspired by the universal pictograms of men and women on restroom doors. Blok is currently creative director at Curbside, the shopping app founded by former Apple engineers that notifies you when your item is available to be picked-up at the store.
