Not too many people will try this experiment, but millions of people have read it with fascination: what if you completely stopped shampooing your hair? Seriously. Not just cut back to once a week, but–as Sarah Theeboom did–stop shampooing your hair for SIX YEARS. Seems strange at first, but then hair has been around a lot longer than shampoo has, right? Not washing your hair is the grooming equivalent of the Paleo Diet. It’s how the cavemen worked it, and so can you. If you dare.
Sarah told her story to Seventeen magazine writer Elizabeth Denton. Sarah allegedly last shampooed her hair six years ago. The first few months are bad, she relays, because your hair has grown used to this unnatural business of shampooing. But once you’re over the hump, the “magic” happens. You and your hair are free. The cutely named “no poo” movement, which advocates going cold turkey from shampoo, is catching on, according to Denton’s article. Seventeen magazine, however, has no shortage of shampoo ads. (We’re pretty sure Denton washed hers twice after the interview.) Still, paleo hair–would you try it?
