A division of the US Department of Agriculture has found that the Okanagan Specialty Fruits’ Arctic Apple “doesn’t pose any harm to other plants and pests.” Arctic Apples (in Golden and Granny varieties) don’t brown when cut open or bruised. Okanagan says the apples will mean less food waste. What the Canadian company needs next to sell its GMO apples in the US is the okay from the FDA.
Organizations who oppose the Arctic Apple, including Friends of the Earth and Food & Water Watch, say the GMO apple is unnecessary and risky–and that it has not been sufficiently tested for safety.
