Chris Rock’s latest film, Top Five, is being criticized by some for its portrayal of a gay character. David Haglund of Slate writes the film “carries an unfortunate whiff of homophobia.”
Haglund is referring to a sex scene flashback between Chelsea (Rosario Dawson) and her former boyfriend Brad played by Anders Holm (Neighbors, Workaholics). She tells Andre (Chris Rock) that he had an anal sex fetish (he wanting to be the recipient). Chelsea says one day she just snapped and felt the need retaliate so she stuck something up there he’ll never forget. Gawker critic Rich Juzwiack is perplexed why Rock “would go out of his way to write a gay character that he then ridicules for enjoying what so many gay people do, and then vilify them for being deceptive.”
